Linkin Park’s humble beginnings started in 1996 when three high school friends formed their band Xero. The California natives recruited a few other band members and began recording and producing songs in a makeshift bedroom studio.
There was an early lack of success and the band changed its line-up and name a few times.
In 1999 Chester Bennington was recruited to the band. The new look vocal team of Bennington and Mike Shinoda gave them the kick on they needed. The same year they changed their name from Hybrid Theory to Linkin Park. Even with these changes, Linkin Park still struggled to sign a record deal.
Five years of hard work paid off when they released their first album “Hybrid Theory” in October 2000. The album sold 4.8 million copies in the first year, making it the best selling album of 2001. Awards for the album, and a number of the songs flowed in, which catapulted the band to world prominence.
The following year Linkin Park performed at more than 300 concerts within a one-year period, and released their remix album “Reanimation”.
They continued to tour and worked on their next album “Meteora” which was released in March 2003. “Meteora” instantly earned worldwide recognition and sold 800,000 copies in the first week.
Following the success of “Meteora”, the band decided not to work on a new studio album for a few years, but rather continue to tour. Their third studio album “Minutes to Midnight” came in May 2007.
Linkin Park’s fourth album is due in 2010.

Much of Linkin Park’s success is due to their unique musical style. Their combination of alternative metal, nu metal and rap rock has proved popular with fans around the world. Another area that sets them apart from other bands is their use of two separate vocalists. Chester Bennington is better known for his blasting hardcore style, while Mike Shinoda does the rapping.
